We are working with a local staff to improve and expand their community based development program. We help point them to local resources to increase the level of sustainability and we support them in any way we can to empower them in expanding their influence in the townships. Our organization has partnerships with American churches both financially and relationally and hosts up to 9 short term teams a year. We coordinate the work these Americans are doing in the townships and oversee their involvment with our staff.
We have learned that, though it takes extra effort, short term teams can benefit the work of our South African friends. We have also learned we have a long ways to go until the system of connecting the US church with their work has a long term benefit for the communities they are entering.
We desire to start connecting the church in Cape Town with some of the development projects our co-workers are doing. We have a desire to see the local church in Cape Town partner with these development projects which will open up possibility for racial reconciliation, in addition to all the other mutual benefits of a partnership of this kind.
We continue to learn weekly about the various hurdles to doing community development in a way that creates owndership in the community and empowers the local people in their fight for better health, both physically and spiritually.
